Hi, listen I am doing this again. Maybe with photography but probably not.

Most likely with Poetry.

Thanks!

News:Sanctity of Life and Religion

I have become increasingly interested in photographing controversial events. Last Spring there was a great deal of opportunity on campus for all the journalists and photographers to be involved in sharing stories. Two of the issues I covered were a traveling anit-abortion demonstration and the campus outreach efforts of Dove World Outreach Center.

The presentation given by this group was incredibly graphic, the nature of their pictures caused more outcry than the fact that they were pro-life, and as such I am not going to include any images that captured their posters. Here are the pro-choice student protesters instead.

The Dove World Outreach Center first began attracting public attention last year when the leaders of the church sent their children to school wearing shirts that read “Islam is of the Devil.” Soon they were also seen weekly around campus, always carrying children, wearing the shirts and sharing with students and staff about the nature Christianity. This past year their most controversial stage was in September, when their head pastor threatened to burn a Koran on September 11th, to show those of the Islam faith that they were not to be tolerated in America.

Here, the worship leader gets into fiery debates with people on campus.

Heading Indoor

Next up was indoor bounce flash. For the first, and hopefully not last, time I was asked to cease and desist photographing people. Nobody cared, except apparently the not present property owner, still it was an interesting afternoon. Thus I present to you, dear readers (readers!), the Friends of the Library Book Sale!

Compliments of the ceiling bounce flash, I present to you, Sean and Magic the Gathering….

A joker who is still alive….

A room full of people….

Daniel and a guitar…..

Finally, with ambient light I took this environmental portrait of the owner of the Schwinn Shop on University Avenue

Flash, light, painting

After learning a bit about bouncing natural light, we turned to the flash.
This first photo was taken at a Jacksonville Jaguars tailgate, the Jags were playing the Broncos. The assignment was to use external flash to capture a found outdoor event. The drama of the morning was seeing which fans where there for the Jags, which were there for the Broncos and who just wanted to see Tim Tebow play again.

These guys were clear Broncos fans to the core, but did not enjoy any connections to an affinity for Tebow.

This next assignment was off-camera bounce flash. A few friends, including my classmate Tiffani Amo, graciously allowed me to photograph them all over campus for this one as I tried to get it right. It was most of our first times working with a light kit, so there was a great deal of trial and error, but it was a great experience.

Next up was the off-camera lights, one bounce and one direct. Brett Pokorny and I partnered up on this one. I took most of my photos of him outside around the Architecture building, that place is a haven of interesting concrete stuctures.

Our next assignment was “Painting with Light.” This is the meaning of the word photography, so very appropriate for the class. Basic procedure here was to turn off all lights, set a long exposure , and use whatever creative methods we desired to paint our subjects into the scene. As much as I had been looking forward to this one, I didn’t get as creative as I wanted too, but I love how this picture of my friends Alex Flores and Mike Rodriguez turned out.

Learning to Light

This semester I have been taking a course on lighting. JOU 4603. The class is tailored to teach us different lighting techniques, with the overall goal being that we leave it knowing how to take a beautifully lit photo no matter what the light situation is. Here we have the photos from our first assignment, wherein we had to take portraits in three different natural-light situations: overcast, full sun, and open shade.

Eighteen-year-old Diamond Earles performs original songs on the corner of 13th Street and University Avenue.

For the second assignment we were to use natural light again, bounced from reflectors. I made mine with a piece of white foam poster board covered on one side with crinkled aluminum foil. My old roommate Jessica Digdigan obliged to be the model for this shoot, as did my neighbor Jason Bowman. Here are my results.

Humble Beginnings

School and Sunshine

I can’t tell you when I first began to love to travel. I cannot describe the first time I felt power in my own written words. I will likely never be able to explain just exactly what it is I love so much about people, or why I want so badly to learn and share their stories.

But maybe, just maybe, I can show you.

This is one of the first pictures I took with effort. That is, I have loved photography for a very long time, but this picture, taken with a pretty crummy 6 megapixel point and shoot, showcases the first moment I learned any sort of technique. It was a 2007 during a medical mission trip in Peru. Some of the team members and I were working on crafts and playing games with the children of a village in their school house and I started taking portraits of them. The group photographer, Dave, taught me the concept of natural light and, in this case, using the sunlight streaming through the open door to light my subject. I wish I could tell you I remembered her name, or her voice, or even what she did that day. I don’t. But I do remember the light.
